This very autobiographical novel is about an Irish-American woman who returns to the African country she lived in long ago. She visits her grown daughter, who works at a clinic that tries to alleviate the effects of the famine that plagues the area, and is deeply involved with the people there as the narrator realizes--too late--that she herself never was.
