In the midst of the Irish Potato Famine, Gracelin`s father finds a way out of debt: he marries her off to their British landlord, Bram, even though his previous two wives have died of what may be unnatural causes. When Gracelin, in her new position, tries to help her people, Bram turns into the brute he was all along, and Gracelin must find a way--however drastic--out of her situation.
